Judy Swann

First Blood

My mother rejected me at birth too.

Hell, I wasn't what she wanted.

I don’t understand you she said.

Until the day she died, she tried

to teach me how to die.

Now my moons are running down.

Now I see it was indeed mine to give

death to her, after having lost

at that first battle, defeated

at my entrance. Momma I said

Can you hear me?  She opened her eyes.

And now I am alive, abundant,

my breasts budding,

and this is my very first blood.
